Treasury Department, United States legal definition

The United States Treasury DepartmentÂ’s basic functions are to develop and propose national and international monetary policies, and to serve as the financial agent of the government to collect taxes, manage the public debt, disburse funds, mint coins, and print currency. As part of the executive branch of government, it is also responsible for enforcing certain laws. Toward that end, the Treasury Department includes the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), the United States Customs Service, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Secret Service.
